  • Backbone The cable used to connect all systems of a multi-level distributed system to an intermediate system.
  • Balanced Line A cable having two conductors which carry voltages opposite in polarity and equal in magnitude with respect to ground.
  • Bandwith The difference between the upper and lower limits of a given band of frequencies. Expressed in Hertz.
  • Baud Unit of data transmission speed meaning bits per second (500 baud = 500 bits per second).
  • Bend Radius Radius of curvature that a fiber optic or metallic cable can bend without any adverse effects.
  • Bit One binary digit.
  • Bit Error Rate The number of errors occuring in a system per second.Typically less than 10e-12.
  • Broadband The technique used to multiplex multiple networks on a single cable without interfering with each other.
